Used clothes stores have multiple benefits.
They provide an alternative to buying new clothes, helping reduce the production of fashion which impacts our planet.
They provide a place for unused clothing and accessories to go rather than remaining hidden in our wardrobes or ending up in landfill.
They provide a source of income to both individuals and businesses.
They provide a visual history of the world of fashion.
And they provide a source of more affordable fashion.
The most significant benefit of used clothes stores, I believe, is the benefit to our planet.
Each year approximately 100 billion garments are produced with 92 million tonnes ending up in landfills. A horrifying figure.
Landfills contribute a variety of both environmental and health problems as they produce harmful gases like methane that contribute to
global warming, as well as soil and water contamination, which are dangerous to both people and our planet.
Landfills also occupy significant land areas, leading to more detrimental deforestation.
While synthetic fabrics can potentially take hundreds of years to decompose!
Anything we can do to reduce this damage is valuable. Small steps can lead to big changes.
It may seem that buying more secondhand clothing and fewer new pieces won't make much of a difference.
However, even just a 1% reduction in the purchasing of new fashion would mean potentially 1 billion less garments would need to be produced
each year!
That is certainly a significant benefit to people and our planet!
The secondhand clothes industry also provides encouragement to brands to make more sustainable fashion as they see their customers looking
for better options.
Used clothes stores come in a variety of forms, from stores offering used luxury clothes to those offering more affordable pre-loved
clothing, and the ones offering a combination of both.
I’ve shared stores from each of these to give you a taste of what’s available.
In recent years the number of online used clothes stores has grown enormously, with people recognising both the benefits and the income
source.
Here I’ve listed 33 of the best used clothes stores from around the world, but there are many, many more. And I have hundreds of
them listed on With Bogart. So make sure you check out the other ones I’ve found. Plus, you can shop these based on your location,
budget, and your style to make shopping, easier.
Happy more sustainable shopping!
If you’re a regular visitor to my blog or follow me on Instagram, you may know that my focus is on making our wardrobes more
sustainable, more ethical. I share ideas and brands to support both.
But you may also notice that some of the pieces I share in my blog, don’t rank well when it comes to their sustainability. I do this because
I recognise that for some people it’s very hard to buy more expensive pieces of clothing that have a better ranking.
So when I share fashion that's not where it should be in terms of quality, sustainability, and ethics, I only share pieces that
are minimalist in style and not based on short-term trends. Therefore, these pieces will continue to serve well in your wardrobe. This isn’t
as good as buying sustainable fashion, but it’s certainly better than heading for on-trend items that quickly stop appealing to you, and
potentially end up as waste.
